With the Hutchins Center at Lawrenceville, the Foundation has supported three core initiatives:
1. Hutchins Institute for Social Justice
The Hutchins Institute for Social Justice at The Lawrenceville School is an interdisciplinary hub that promotes academic research and active civic engagement. Established in 2021, the Center aims to prepare students as critical thinkers and doers by focusing on community empowerment studies through scholarship, programming, and experiential learning. It offers opportunities for student research, faculty and staff fellowships, and summer studies, fostering a culture of belonging and lifelong learning.
2. Hutchins Scholars Programs
The Hutchins Scholars Programs at Lawrenceville recognize and support outstanding students, providing them with research experiences and preparing them for top university programs. At present, there are two Hutchins Scholars Programs, one for Civic Life, directed by Zaheer Ali, and one for Math and Science, directed by Ken Mills.

3. The Hutchins Galleries
The Hutchins Galleries at The Lawrenceville School showcases the school’s permanent art collection and hosts rotating exhibits by regional artists. They aim to inspire reflection, community dialogue, and cultural awareness through art. Students actively contribute to the galleries with their artwork, particularly during events like the Student Arts Showcase, allowing them to share their creativity and talent with the school community. This vibrant space celebrates art and culture, integrating them into the life of the school. The gallery features a selection of the Hutchins family’s leading collection of Ansel Adams photographs.
The Hutchins Institute for Social Justice is directed by Zaheer Ali. Mr. Ali also oversees the Hutchins Scholars Programs for Civic Life. Ken Mills directs the Hutchins Scholars Program for Math and Science. Melina Guarino directs the Hutchins Galleries. After more than 20 years of service on Lawrencville’s board, Mr. Hutchins is now Trustee Emeritus.
